There are barriers which keep the demons out of Human World. After the series is over, the barrier was destroyed, in hopes a few responsible demons being picked on in Demon World could co-exist peacefully with humans.

90% of humans can't sense demon activity, a disguised demon, or someone possessed by a demon - any of that good stuff. Those who CAN are referred to as psychics, which is the category a few main characters fall into.

The SPIRIT DETECTIVE is a psychic who has an abnormal amount of spirit energy (fighting power, essentially) employed by Prince Koenma to basically police the demons and humans, making sure the demons don't get out of hand.
